As expected, state lawmakers in Albany say the budget will not include a bailout for ailing SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher warned state legislators in February that Downstate was losing $8 million a month, and could need as much as $150 million tax dollars to stay afloat another year.

To save money, last week SUNY voted to close its Long Island College Hospital facility over the complaints of faculty and area lawmakers.

SUNY Downstate must submit a restructuring plan by June, after which it may be eligible for taxpayer support. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
