Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced her support for same-sex marriage Monday.

In a video released by the gay rights group Human Rights Campaign, Clinton said she believes in the rights of all Americans to marry both "personally and as a matter of policy and law."

"LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones," Clinton said in the video. "They are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship -- that includes marriage."

As Secretary of State, Clinton made the fight for gay rights part of the State Department's agenda.

Her announcement comes as the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments regarding the Defense of Marriage Act.

The law was signed by her husband -- then President Bill Clinton -- in 1996.

He recently said he now believes the law is unconstitutional and should be overturned.
