The Republican field of mayoral candidates has narrowed by one.
Struggling with campaign fundraising and trailing in early polls, Tom Allon announced Monday he is dropping out of the crowded race.
Allon, a former Democrat who owns the City and State newspaper, last week reported that his campaign had raised slightly more than $12,000 and was more than $4,000 in debt.
Allon, who made education reform the centerpiece of his campaign, praised several of his rivals in the race including Republicans Joe Lhota and John Catsimatidis.
George McDonald is the third Republican in the race, and Adolfo Carrion is running on the Independence Party line.
