Many of New York State's gun show operators have agreed to new rules on sales aimed at making sure that guns are only sold to those who pass background checks.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said that 23 operators, about 80 percent, will abide by what are called the model gun show procedures.

The rules include keeping tabs on firearms brought to shows and checking later to determine if a background check was done on buyers.

Operators are also required to monitor areas around gun shows to prevent unregulated sales outside.

The rules were developed after undercover operations showed that background checks were not given to buyers who admitted they didn't think they could pass.
