Obama Signs Expanded Violence Against Women Act

President Barack Obama signed an expanded Violence Against Women Act into law Thursday.
The bill allows tribal courts to prosecute non-Native American men who commit domestic abuse on Native American reservations.
It also creates tougher sentences for stalking and provides housing assistance services for domestic violence victims.
The president said he's pleased with how quickly the law got renewed, despite conservative opposition.
"Reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act is something I called for in my State of the Union address, and when I see how quick it got done, I'm feeling, makes me feel optimistic," he said.
The 1994 bill was spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden when he was a senator.
