A teachers group that supports the implementation of a new statewide teacher evaluation system is throwing its support behind Governor Andrew Cuomo's bid to enforce his own plan if the city and the teacher's union cannot reach a deal.

Educators For Excellence has started airing a TV ad asking state lawmakers to take action now so the system can be in place by the start of the next school year in September.

The city Department of Education and the United Federation of Teachers have so far been unable to reach a deal.

Because of the inaction, the city has lost out on about $250 million in state education funding and is in jeopardy of losing even more.

Cuomo said he would submit legislation this week requiring the DOE and UFT to reach a deal by September or the state would impose its own evaluation system.
