Democratic City Councilman Domenic Recchia of Brooklyn announced Sunday that he is running for Congress.

Recchia first posted on Twitter "I'm in," and then said in a release later that day that he will soon file paperwork to run for the 11th Congressional District seat next year.

The move could set up a potential Democratic primary against former Congressman Michael McMahon.

The winner of that race would then challenge Republican Michael Grimm, who currently represents the 11th District.

Recchia will be forced out of the City Council this year because of term limits.
