The head of Con Edison was on NY1's Inside City Hall Tuesday night, where he talked about what steps the company is taking in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Kevin Burke said the utility will look at new technology to avoid extensive power outages in the future.

He said Con Ed has committed to spending $250 million to upgrade its equipment and make sure it's installed a safe distance from potential storm surges.

One of the upgrades customers frequently request is burying overhead power lines, but Burke said that's not the answer.

"We did the analysis a few years ago and we looked at, if you undergrounded everything in the electric system, it would probably triple the rates in the system, and when people look at that trade-off, then they're not sure they want everything undergrounded," Burke said.

Burke estimated burying the rest of the overhead lines would cost $60 billion and take 10 years.
