The city has put out a challenge to engineers, urban designers and policy experts to improve the look and functionality of payphones.
While cellphones have rendered them mostly obsolete, there are still some 24,000 payphones left in the city.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said they still play a key role during emergencies.
Interested applicants have until January 23 to submit their ideas at nyc.gov.
A winner will be announced in February.
