DEC Releases New Set Of Hydrofracking Regulations

The Department of Environmental Conservation released its newest set of proposed regulations for hydrofracking Thursday, the day that the final regulations would have been due.
Thursday was the deadline for the DEC to finalize the rules for the controversial process, but the agency filed for a 90-day extension.
It says it's waiting on the state Department of Health and its commissioner, Dr. Nirav Shah, to complete a health-impact study on hydrofracking before it moves forward with its final proposals.
The DEC released this latest set ahead of a public comment period that begins on December 12.
In a statement, the agency said "DEC will not take any final action until after Dr. Shah's health review is completed. Today's action merely extends the rule making period to enable DEC to take into account Dr. Shah's review."
Supporters of hydrofracking say it will create jobs, while opponents say it pollutes water sources.
