Army Sergeant Demoted In Rank, Sentenced To Hard Labor For Hazing Manhattan Soldier

By: NY1 News

An Army staff sergeant was sentenced to 60 days' hard labor and a reduction in rank on Wednesday after he was found guilty of hazing Private Danny Chen, a Manhattan-born soldier who committed suicide last year in Afghanistan.

Besides hazing, the jury in Fort Bragg, N.C. found Sergeant Andrew Van Bockel guilty of dereliction of duty and maltreatment.

Prosecutors said Van Bockel called Chen several anti-Asian slurs and forced the private to crawl over rocks and suffer punishments for crimes he did not do.

Chen was 18 years old when he committed suicide on October 3, 2011.

Six other members of the Army were previously convicted in connection to this case on charges including assault, racial maltreatment and hazing.

Four of them were sentenced to serve jail time.
