Districting Commission Passes City Council Redistricting Proposal

The City Council redistricting proposal is now one step away from taking effect for the next decade.
After touring the boroughs and holding public hearings, some of which were heated, the districting commission voted unanimously to pass the proposal at a public meeting Thursday night in Manhattan.
The proposal will now head to the City Council itself to be voted on.
If passed, the redrawn lines will be adopted for the next 10 years.
Some community members and local lawmakers are concerned they haven't gotten a thorough enough look at the new districts.
"People in the community, organizations, other groups were not provided opportunity to comment on the final proposed maps," said one resident.
"We believe that the outcome of this process will impact the whole New York City for the next 10 years, and we believe that it isn't fair to send this process straight to the council where we're gonna be voting," said City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.
The proposal goes to the city council Friday. They'll have until December 7 to take action.
