Senator Charles Schumer is urging energy regulators to stop a deal that could spark a rate hike on consumers' next electric bill.
In a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Schumer says lower-cost power plants are being excluded from the state's energy market in favor of older, less efficient ones.
That means the average family would have to pay about $9 more each month for gas and electricity.
Homeowners and small businesses could be the hardest hit.
"As a small business owner we run a budget just like a household, and any increase in costs or failure to reduce costs means that we have to look for savings in other places, like pay our employees less or raising our prices," said Amy Bennett, the owner of the Greene Grape Market.
Schumer wants officials to come up with an affordable alternative for New Yorkers.
