Campaign Finance Board Scolds Bloomberg's 2009 Campaign For Contribution

Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s 2009 campaign received a scolding from the New York City Campaign Finance Board on Thursday.
During his run for mayor, Bloomberg contributed $1.2 million to the state Independence Party to pay for a poll-watching operation.
The board received a complaint that the contribution violated state election laws.
In a vote of three to one on Thursday, the board dismissed the complaint but said the mayor’s contribution was made to avoid the city’s disclosure requirement.
"Political parties that receive money into their housekeeping accounts actually cannot, by law, spend that money directly on behalf of candidates," said Amy Loprest of the New York City Campaign Finance Board.
The contribution was never spent on Mayor Bloomberg’s campaign.
Political Consultant John Haggerty was convicted of stealing the funds.
