City Wants To Make Path To Citizenship Easier For Immigrant Parents

The city is looking to make it easier for immigrant parents to become U.S. citizens.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the expansion of the NYCitizenship program Thursday.
It will now include parents of students in the city's public schools.
The program will provide free legal assistance as well as micro loans to parents who can't afford to go through the expensive process of becoming a citizen.
"When parents become U.S. citizens, their children under age 18 also gain citizenship, so we're working to help as many of these parents as we can before, as we can successfully navigate their naturalization process before their children become adults," said Bloomberg.
The first NYCitizenship in Schools event will be held at the Morris Educational Campus in the Bronx.
The mayor says the focus of the expansion will initially be on the 30,000 parents of high school students eligible, though he says no parents will be turned away.
