State Senator Adriano Espaillat of Manhattan and his challenger, Guillermo Linares, debated on NY1's "Inside City Hall" Monday and discussed a flier sent out by the Espaillat camp.

Espaillat-Linares Debate

The flier implies Linares betrayed Latinos by endorsing Charles Rangel for Congress, instead of Rangel's Democratic primary opponent, Espaillat.

"It is shameful, also. This is highly charged and divisive and it it not the type of campaign we ought to be having, pinning one community against the other," said Linares.

"Guillermo Linares has adhered to backroom politics, supporting a candidate to then supporting him for [State] Senate and extend his seat to his daughter as if it were a bloodline. That is outrageous," Espaillat said.

Rangel is holding a press conference Tuesday to ask Espaillat to leave race out of the campaign.

The long-time congressman fended off Espaillat earlier this year in a heated primary battle.

Espaillat joined the state Legislature as an assemblyman in 1997 and became a state senator in 2011.

Linares served in the City Council for 10 years and was elected to the State Assembly in 2010.

The primary for Espaillat and Linares will be held on Thursday, September 13.
