Former Mayor Ed Koch is expected to leave the hospital Friday.

He's being treated for anemia at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Koch's spokesman said the former mayor took about two pints of blood in transfusions.

He said Koch became ill while at a friend's house in North Carolina over the weekend.

He was not planning to attend the Democratic National Convention, although he is a superdelegate and supporter of the president's re-election.

Koch will be 88 in December.
