New York Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez is pushing legislation to stop hazing in the military, by increasing diversity training, making it easier for soldiers to transfer out of hostile units and improving the process for reporting such incidents.

This is in response to the suicide of Chinatown native Danny Chen, who killed himself after allegedly enduring severe hazing from fellow soldiers while in Afghanistan.

Velazquez said the military needs to look in the mirror and make an honest assessment of how deep the problem is.

"When we know the full scope of this problem, we will have a better chance of tackling it," said Velazquez.

"Hazing and the lack of accountability for it, poisons our national security," said Elizabeth OuYang of the Organization of Chinese Americans' New York chapter.

Eight soldiers are facing charges in connection with Chen's death.
