City Council members on Friday passed a resolution calling on the United States military to impose diversity training for new recruits in the wake of Private Danny Chen's death.

The 19-year-old Chinatown native shot himself in Afghanistan apparently after being mocked by his fellow soldiers because of his ethnicity.

In honor of Chen, elected officials hope to put pressure on the U.S. Department of Defense to examine its policies around cultural awareness.

"We will make sure that Danny Chen didn't die in vain, that his life will always be remembered and cherished, and that we will prevent this kind of tragedy from ever happening again to another family,” said City Councilwoman Margaret Chin.

Earlier this week, an investigative hearing recommended that the most serious charge against one of soldiers charged in connection with Chen's death be dropped.

Seven other members of Chen's unit face similar hearings.
