Opponents sounded off on a plan to expand Chelsea Market vertically at a Wednesday night meeting of Community Board, saying the proposed tower will take away from the neighborhood's charm and lead to more congestion.

Chelsea Market's owner, Jamestown Properties, wants to add nine floors of office space on the 10th Avenue side of the market and a hotel on the 9th Avenue side.

"The Chelsea Market complex is a wonderful example of adaptive reuse of an historic building. It's an icon, it's beloved," said historic preservation advocate Andrew Berman. These two huge towers that they want to build on top of the complex would really ruin the integrity of it."

"I think there are seven hotels right in that area, and I think to expand on top of it is to deface a really wonderful building."

Zoning changes would need to be approved before the proposal can move forward.

Jamestown Properties says the development will create 3,600 jobs.
