Representatives from Comptroller John Liu's campaign said he will return any donations from his 2009 campaign found to be over the legal limit.

The announcement came after an exclusive NY1 report found Liu was still accepting donations and that some of those contributions violated city campaign finance rules.

Since taking office two years ago, Liu’s 2009 campaign account has accepted $250,000 in contributions to pay off old campaign debt.

NY1 found contributions from the firefighters union, a state construction union, a local plumbers union, a carpenters union and a local transportation union exceeded the legal limit of $7,425.

Liu's 2009 account is nearly $8,000 in the hole.

According to his spokesman, Liu has been spending that cash on expenses related to his ‘09 campaign, like ads placed during the comptroller’s race.

However, NY1 was told that the campaign has already returned some questionable donations connected to the 2009 race.

In November, one of Liu's fundraisers was charged with setting up straw donors to get over-the-limit contributions.

Liu’s 2013 campaign is also the subject of an ongoing investigation by the U.S. attorney’s office.
