For a mild-mannered guy, Tom DiNapoli has generated some spicy controversy in his political career.
After the state legislature appointed him to replace Alan Hevesi in 2007, then-Governor Eliot Spitzer blew a gasket – threatening to go to the districts of individual lawmakers who supported Dinapoli and campaign against them.
Four years ago, DiNapoli withstood a strong and well-funded challenged by a political neophyte, Harry Wilson, beating the Republican by four-and-a-half percentage points.
It’s been a quieter race this year but DiNapoli does face a man who has some experience balancing the books in his own right -- Onondaga County Comptroller Bob Antonacci, a fixture in the Syracuse area but little known in other regions of the state.
The state’s pension fund is massive – valued at $176 billion earlier this year – and the comptroller is its only trustee. No one deserves a free pass when that much money is involved.
