INSIDE THE PAPERS

The New York Times

Matt Flegenheimer reports: “The base fare for subways and buses ‘probably will go up,’ the chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said on Monday, supplying the most telling signal yet about how next year’s planned fare increase is likely to be carried out.”

New York Post

Erik Kriss writes: “College costs are going through the roof — with the help of some big shots at the State University of New York who’ve been running up bills for booze, hockey tickets, parties and overseas travel. A new audit by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli found about $4 million in ‘questionable’ expenses at SUNY’s vaunted Research Foundation at a time when the university is raising tuition.”

New York Daily News

Glenn Blain reports: “Get ready to see more of Gov. Cuomo on the campaign trail – both in New York and beyond. In addition to serving as a surrogate campaigner for President Obama, Cuomo also plans to step up his political activities on behalf of New York candidates in the final two weeks before Election Day.”

Wall Street Journal

Michael Howard Saul writes: “Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration filed a lawsuit on Monday against what is believed to be the largest operator of illegal hotels in New York City, seeking $1 million in damages and the creation of a restitution fund for tourists who have been duped and exposed to dangerous conditions.”

Until tomorrow.
