As the second named storm of this hurricane season churns through the Caribbean, Mayor Bill de Blasio on Friday kicked off a campaign for storm preparations.

August 1 marks the start of the peak hurricane season for our area - so the city is working to make sure public housing residents are ready to deal with a potential storm.

The mayor and commissioners from the Office of Emergency Management and New York City Housing Authority gave out "Go Bags" in Red Hook.

The bags are meant to be packed with essential items such as a three to five day supply of medication, bandages and other necessities.

The city encourages all New Yorkers to make up "Go Bags" of their own.

Officials also suggest finding out if your home is in an evacuation zone, being aware of evacuation routes and making a household plan to reconnect with loved ones. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
