Elected officials are speaking out for the first time since Eric Garner's death.

Members of the City Council, state Assembly and state Senate gathered on the steps of City Hall to call for an inspector general investigation of New York City Police Department conduct.

One member of the Council told NY1 the Civilian Complaint Review Board has heard more than 1,000 complaints about chokeholds between 2009 and 2013.

City Councilman Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn also weighed in on the response to the case by City Hall.

"I just want to make sure that this administration that I believe was elected in large part because of how they said they'd change the tenor and culture of the NYPD, gets this correct," Williams said. "It has to gets this correct."

The officials also renewed a push to have all encounters between civilians and police be videotaped.
