Michael Meenan joined NY1 News as the station’s education reporter in August of 2006. Meenan, a Bronx native fluent in Spanish, spends most of his time in city schools covering the achievements and challenges of the nation’s largest school system.
His reports range from the effects of the fluctuating budget on city schools, to concerns of New York City’s teachers union, to how school children perform on high-stakes academic exams.
Prior to NY1, Meenan reported for The New York Times’ Metro Section and served as Deputy Editor of Gay City News.
Before embarking on a journalism career, he worked as dean of students and teachers at two New York City public high schools: William H. Taft in the Bronx and George Washington in Manhattan.
Meenan has also taught English, social studies and debate, in addition to coaching various athletic teams.
