Members of the city fire department on Thursday gathered in Manhattan to say goodbye to one of their own killed in a tragic accident last week.

Funeral services were held on the Upper East Side for 56-year-old firefighter John Monteverde.

He was killed last week by an alleged drunk driver.

The 31-year department veteran was on a motorcycle when he collided with a vehicle in Union Township last week.

Monteverde was a decorated and long-time member of Engine Company 22 in Manhattan, although he recently transferred to Engine Company 159 on Staten Island.

"He was a really good guy. He was a hard worker. And always working hard for his family. I was a firefighter with John 22 years ago, and then I came back and worked with him again the last six years. It's just a sad story. As sad as everyone is, as we tell stories about John, we're laughing because that's the kind of guy he was," said FDNY Captain Chris Reginella.

Anthony Marsel, 24, of Elizabeth, New Jersey has been charged with driving while intoxicated in connection with the crash. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
