The Museum of Modern Art in Midtown recently screened "Side By Side", a new documentary produced by Keanu Reeves and directed by Chris Kenneally.

The film explores the past and future of filmmaking, comparing the world of celluloid and film with the new, magical digital world. It was a subject that fascinated Keanu.

"There was this shift in how we made movies and how we tell stories between photochemical and digital and to me it was not only what are we gaining by digital, but what are we losing?" says Reeves. "And I just wanted to talk to other artists and people involved this evolution, revolution and find out their thoughts."

Kenneally shot the movie in digital but is worried about the future of film.

"Now we have another tool, another option, but the sad part is that possibly this new option is kind of... maybe the end of film," says Kenneally.

Asked whether he prefers film or digital, Reeves says he had only one allegiance.

"I'm a movie guy!" he says. "I love storytelling, I love films, however they're made."

"Side By Side" is not merely for filmmakers. Those of us who enjoy movies will enjoy hearing directors' views on celluloid versus digital, once this movie comes out in New York at the end of August.
