The '80s pop sensation El DeBarge is leaving the old mega hits behind and is performing in Manhattan to promote his new album, "Second Chance."

"I titled it for two reasons," says DeBarge. "This is my great 'second chance,' and another reason, I want to dedicate it to the world. Everybody out there is looking for second chances. So it's in stores, November 30th is the release date."

"El," as he is known, recently performed at S.O.B.'s in Lower Manhattan and is coming back after a forced break from the music biz.

George Whipple: Where have you been for the last 15 or 20 years, since the last CD? Why did it take so long to get a new CD out?

DeBarge: Well, I was stuck.

Whipple: They were records, wait a minute, they were records back in the '80s. So this is your first CD, but not your first record.

DeBarge: I managed to get one CD in before I went on a long drug binge. I'm so grateful to be sober today. You know, I had a 22-year drug binge that I've been rescued from by the grace of God.

Now he's back, and his second chance has landed him on the cover of Ebony Magazine and the opportunity to open for superstar Mary J. Blige.

"That's the reason why I was looking forward to coming here, to kick this whole tour off that I'm doing with Mary J. Blige," says DeBarge. "I want to see what's really happening, if they're going to like me."

DeBarge will be opening for Blige at Radio City Music Hall on October 11-12.
