Angel Band recently performed at Rockwood Music Hall in the Lower East Side in support of their second CD, "Bless My Sole."

Band member Aly Paige says the title is less about the spirit and more to do with footwear.

"The new CD is called 'Bless My Sole,' S-O-L-E," says Paige. "We like our boots, so it's a boot reference. Woo hoo!"

Acoustic guitar great David Bromberg, who sat in on a few songs, greatly admires the band.

"They're very eclectic, but at the bottom is very rooted music. If you like any kind of rock 'n roll, soul, you'll find it in there," he says.

Nancy Josephson, the band leader, says the music has a wide net of influences.

"I love Chris Whitley, Tom Waits. I love really strong, killer songwriters. I love Patsy Cline, Bonnie Raitt, The Black Crows. We kind of run the gambit from Patsy to Aretha [Franklin]. That's a pretty wide gambit," says Josephson.

Josephson, a longtime supporter of the relief effort in Haiti, has penned a song about the country.

"There's a foundation in Jacmel, Haiti, called 'Art Creation Foundation For Children,' and we've been supporting them by selling these wonderful little papier-mache birds that the kids from the foundation make," says Josephson. "And they heard our tune, 'Hope Is On The Way,' and they sort of dug it."

Get to know and love Angel Band. Yours truly never leads you astray when it comes to music, and this band is good.
