Lincoln Center Gets Decked Out For CFDA Fashion Awards

The 2009 Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards - considered to be the Oscars of fashion - were handed out to a merry Lincoln Center crowd that was not depressed by the recession. NY1's George Whipple filed the following report.

The 2009 Council of Fashion Designers of America Fashion Awards were recently presented in at Alice Tully Hall in Manhattan's Lincoln Center.

First Lady Michelle Obama, who appeared in a videotaped message, was honored with a special board of directors' tribute presented by CFDA President Diane Von Furstenberg.

"Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon presented to two tying winners for menswear designer of the year - Scott Studenberg for Band of Outsiders and Italo Zucchelli for the Calvin Klein collection.

"Looks great. Super glamorous and supersexy, so that's what you want," said Zucchelli.

Another star wearing Calvin Klein that night was Taylor Lautner of "Twilight."

George Whipple: What do you think I'm wearing?

Lautner: I don't know. What are you wearing?

Whipple: Calvin Klein.

Lautner: No way. That's why you look so good. I knew you looked good when I saw you.

Project Runway's Heidi Klum and designer Michael Kors explained the fascination in the United States with the fashion world.

Klum: What is the obsession with fashion?

Kors: Dreams, escape, fantasy, sex, glamor.

Klum: Sex?

Kors: Yeah, exactly. All of it!

Blake Lively of "Gossip Girl" presented the Swarovski Crystal award.

"I always get really nervous when I have to present awards. So, I'm nervous," said Lively. "Especially with so many people that I admire and that I'm so inspired by sitting in the audience."

One of the winners of the Swarovski award for women's wear was Alexander Wang.

The Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award was presented to Anna Sui by musician Jack White of The White Stripes.

Whipple: You've got a pretty hot date here. Where did you pick him up?

Sui: We're both Detroiters!

The recession might have made it a tough year for fashion and fashion designers, but it didn't dull the mood at Lincoln Center.
