From big screen adaptations to battlefield adventures, the latest offerings in the gaming world are sure to engage players at every level. NY1's Adam Balkin filed the following report. If experiencing the prehistoric animated film, in 3D no less, isn't
enough for a youngster in your home, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" the game, should help tide them over at least until the DVD release.
Unlike previous "Ice Age" games, this time around you can play as
about a half a dozen different characters from the film as Sid, Scrat,
Manny, and Diego travel across a frozen tundra and happen upon a world of dinosaurs who you often have to run from in order to avoid being served up as their lunch. With more than 15 levels, all with
different environments, you also have to learn to jump, scoot, and
climb around, across, and over mother nature's obstacles in order to avoid being food for the vultures. This title also supports a multi-
player mode where up to four people can compete in movie inspired mini-games.
"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" is available on all the consoles,
PC, and the Nintendo DS for between $20 and $50.
Meanwhile, fans of the Battlefield series of games will be excited by the latest title, "Battlefield Heroes", not just because it's a new
Battlefield game but more so, because it's absolutely free. The web-based, online game is set in World War II and has a cartoony sort of look.
Even though it's not super gory, it does get a Teen rating.
It's the first game launched under EA's new "Play 4 Free" line that lets you play without having to pay, though there are microtransactions in the game for certain aesthetic character
modifications. Plus, there will be ads, not in the game, but on the
website you need to go to first in order to launch the game. Just
like other battlefields, you pop up as a soldier on either the Allied
or Axis side of the skirmish and try to control as many flags spawn
points as possible, while defeating as many members of the opposite team as possible.
This latest title is designed to bring more fans to the Battlefield universe in several ways. First off, it tries to place players inside servers or online worlds, populated by players of roughly the same skill level. And, unlike previous versions, you don't need a top of the line computer and graphics card to get the best experience and get an unfair jump on those with inferior systems.
"Battlefield Heros" is playable right now only through PCs or Macs
running Windows. It's available at www.battlefieldheroes.com.
