I always thought MC Hammer was funny. I thought his baggy pants were funny. I thought the fact that he was rapping about members of The Addams Family was funny. I thought his Saturday morning cartoon "Hammerman" was funny. And I thought it was particularly hilarious when he made an ill-fated attempt to go gangsta. But there's not a lot that's funny or entertaining about his new A&E reality show "Hammertime."

Apparently cable networks have decided that any second rate celebrity with a family is worthy of their own reality show. Occasionally, like with "The Osbournes", the family dysfunction makes for fun and unique viewing, but more often than not you end up with a show like "Hammertime", in which papa Hammer talks to one son about his grades and helps a daughter get going on her recording career.

In case you were wondering, if it is more exciting than I just made it sound, it's not. The show basically consists of this -- watch Hammer tell the family it's time to clean the house. Watch Hammer work on his new music video. Watch Hammer send tweets on Twitter, which yes, is even more boring than reading one's tweets on Twitter. Don't get me wrong, Hammer (whose real name is Stanley Burrell) seems like a decent guy with a decent family. But every decent guy with a decent family doesn't need to have his own TV show. And there are awkward elements as well. On one hand, Hammer could be commended for talking to his son and son's teacher about a poor report card. On the other hand, why are you showing off your 10-year-old son's poor grades on national television? Is that really father of the year material? Although he probably fell out of contention for that award by putting his children on a reality show to begin with. But worst of all, for perhaps the first time ever, Hammer is not making me laugh. At least not until he busts out the parachute pants.
