If it weren't for some vintage photographs, I honestly wouldn't be able to remember much about my early travels. So it got me thinking. Just how old should kids be to travel?

I posed this question to the experts at a family travel expo in Manhattan recently. When it comes to flying, my parents had the right idea. They kept me far from the fuselage until I was three.

"The most difficult time to fly is just when they start to walk because that whole "sit in your seat until the pilot says otherwise" does not compute. 9 months to about 2 years is a very difficult travel time," said Joyce Shulman, the CEO of Macaroni Kid.

Some modern day moms suggest that five years old is a good age to take children on cruises.

"The issue is that many of the cruises don't offer any kind of child care for children under three," Shulman said.

Road trips are easiest when kids turn two. At that age, by law, the car seat can turn around.

"You can reach back and hand them something and they are facing you. It's a [much] different perspective," said Ryan Sanders of fatherhood.org.

So how old should kids be for trips to theme parks?

"Destination theme parks, no less than five, for many reasons. The investment, will they remember and they can't get on a lot of the rides," said Carol Cain of nycitymama.com.

What is the optimum age for a happy camper?

"A baby that sleeps through the night or a baby that can actually walk but understands that they can't leave the tent to explore," Cain said.

And how about a trip to Europe?

"When are those memories going to start forming? [I say] 7 or 8 for Europe," Shulman said.

While I might not remember my early trips, I've managed to make a living bragging about them.
