A quick getaway spot that is a little bit Niagara and a little bit Saratoga is a lot closer to New York City. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

A hundred miles north of New York City in Ulster County, a former paper mill is breathing new life as an upscale boutique hotel.

The estimated $12 million Diamond Mills Hotel and Tavern in Saugerties has 30 rooms, all with balconies.

“It sat dormant for many years and I always admired this property when I drove by," says Diamond Mills Hotel owner Tom Struzzieri. "And it sits here on this beautiful waterfall on the Esopus Creek, just a few hundred yards from the Hudson River.”

Already booked up to with visitors for the 10-week horse show season, Diamond Mills also expects to be a big wedding draw as well as an easy retreat for city slickers.

A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Diamond Mills is also home to a tavern that serves up food true to its roots.

“Our burger is a unique blend of freshly made, just for us, with local Hudson Valley cattle,” says executive chef Giuseppe Napoli.

But it’s what’s off the menu that might hold the most appeal.

“Come springtime, I think it is going to be one of the biggest pulls from around the Hudson Valley, even further. People can come here, dine on the deck by the waterfalls, and enjoy a nice meal or just have a drink out there,” says Napoli.

Rates start at $225 a night. From now through Valentine’s Day, stay two nights and get a complimentary in-room champagne breakfast valued at $60. Some blackout dates apply.

There’s also a turn-down amenity you won’t turn down — caramel chocolates homemade by the resident pastry chef.
