If the polar bear exhibit at the Central Park Zoo has you yearning to see the animals in their native habitat, pack your bags for the tundra in Churchill, Manitoba. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report. The trip starts in Winnipeg, Canada with a charter flight to Churchill, about two hours north. Val traveled courtesy of Frontiers North, one of the operators that provides guided tundra buggy tours.
Three of its tours split time between the tundra and the town where you spend from two to five nights. The three-night escorted “Enthusiast” tour makes visits in town, includes all meals, and dog sledding as well as two full days on the tundra.
For more time on the tundra, overnight in the mobile Tundra Buggy Lodge. It is in the prime polar bear viewing area in the company of scientists and researchers.
Approximate rates for the Churchill Town and Tundra Experience in October and November range from $2,540 per person for the two night “Adventurer” Level, $5,200 per person for the three night “Enthusiast” and $7,530 for the five night “Specialist”.
All of the levels include a pre-night and post-night stay in Winnipeg.
