Philadelphia's Franklin Institute is home to a new exhibit exploring the life and work of legendary astronomer Galileo. NY1's Valarie D'Elia filed the following report.

As we approach the summer solstice, it's a perfect time to celebrate the International Year of Astronomy. Perhaps a trip to Philadelphia is in the stars.

From now through just after Labor Day, Philadelphia's Franklin Institute is the location for a fascinating exhibit called "Galileo, The Medici And The Age Of Astronomy."

Timed to take place to coincide with the 400th anniversary of Galileo's astronomical discoveries, it explores the effect Galileo's work had on science and the world. In addition to containing more than 100 artifacts from Philadelphia's sister city - Florence, Italy - it features one of only two remaining telescopes owned and built by Galileo.

The exhibit showcases the father of astronomy's accomplishments and his relationship to the Medicis, a dynastic family that were patrons of art and science, support that transformed the course of mankind over three centuries.

Tickets are $20.75 for adults, and $14 for kids from ages 4 to 11.

Several Philadelphia hotels are participating in the Galileo exhibit by offering overnight packages including free tickets. For more information, visit www.gophila.com/GALILEO.
