NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report.

Each new school year that begins in the age of mobile devices brings with it a whole new crop of back-to-school apps. While most are aimed at reinforcing lessons in math, reading and other traditional subjects, two new apps are a bit off the beaten path.

Awesome Upstander!

The "Awesome Upstander!" app is designed to help teach children how to deal with bullies. The gamer is an "upstander," a student who helps stand up to bullies. The ultimate goal of each level is to simply stand in between the bully and the buddy who is the target. Along the way, the player has to pick up both friends and certain items like a cellphone to call for help.

Developers say the app is designed to promote empathy, remind kids not to turn a blind eye and that there is power in numbers when helping to stick up for a friend and reinforces the need for kids to get an adult if they witness bullying.

The game's website, AwesomeUpstander.com, also has talking points for parents and teachers looking to address bullying.

"Awesome Upstander!" is an iOS and Android app for 99 cents.

GazziliScience

"GazziliScience" teaches a more traditional subject, but what's untraditional about it is who it is trying to teach science -- pre-schoolers. The app has six lessons: "Plants," "Water Cycle," "Seasons," "Non-Living," "Sink Or Float" and "The Five Senses."

Each lesson offers up a very hands-on, simple-to-understand concept. The "Water Cycle" lesson has users first touch the sun to heat up the water in the pond, then drag the condensation up to form the clouds and then touch the clouds to make it rain, which fills the pond again. Meanwhile, a narrator explains very clearly exactly what is happening.

After each lesson is completed, the user can get a part to help Purple, the app's mascot, build a science machine that will eventual feed Cleo and Theo.
