NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report. Movie/App Downloads
Warner Bros. what could be the beginning of the future of digital movie downloads. The studio has just released "The Dark Knight: App Edition" and "Inception: App Edition." They are both downloaded via the app store on iTunes instead of the movie section, because they are apps first.
Whereas tradition movie downloads are usually just the movies, with maybe a few extra scenes, having the movie play through an app allows the download to be more like a traditional DVD, with all the extras one is used to be offered through an actual disc.
With these apps, users get extra clips, "behind the scenes" features, pictures, trivia games and exclusive music tracks.
There's a major social networking aspect as well. While users are watching the movie, they can tweet about them on Twitter or make posts to Facebook. There are even spots within the movie with little icons that pop up, and users who tap them can instantly post that quote online for friends.
Both apps are free to start, but only include a few minutes of the movie and a handful of the extras.
To get the full versions with the entire movie and all the add-ons, it's $9.99 for "The Dark Knight" and $11.99 for "Inception." Right now, they are available only on iPads, iPhones, and iPod Touches.
Solar System For iPad
The same app publisher that brought the innovative "The Elements" App for learning the Periodic Table is now out with a similar "textbook of the future" approach to astronomy. The "Solar System For iPad" app lets users click through the universe, and just like in "The Elements," it helps explain some complex science through the use of interactive, 3-D images and animations.
Even kids who cannot read should still have their curiosity piqued by the images, and at the very least may ask some basic questions about what's going on in them.
"Solar System For iPad" is for the iPad for $13.99.
