NY1 highlights the coolest and newest apps for your cell phone or mobile device in the twice-weekly segment “App Wrap.” NY1’s Adam Balkin filed the following report. Air Display
Sometimes the cost of an electronic device like an iPad can be justified when it can take on the work of some other additional device. For example, the app "Air Display" allows people who use a WiFi network on their desktop or laptop computer to set an iPad next to the monitor, and the iPad becomes a second monitor. Users can drag stuff into either monitor and either interact with the iPad as a touchscreen or with a mouse and keyboard like a traditional display.
Of course, the iPad is not quite as big as a stand-alone display, but it certainly big enough to show Facebook, stock tickers, or anything users would like to see without taking up real estate on the main display.
"Air Display" makes most sense on an iPad, but it also works with the iPhone and iPod Touch. It costs $9.99.
GeoReader
If the winter holiday season becomes a roadtrip season to see family and friends, the app "GeoReader" can help make those drives go by more quickly or at least be more interesting.
The app uses GPS to tell drivers when they are passing landmarks or interesting places, and then gives a quick history of the spot. Users do not touch anything, but rather listen to the app read aloud what is outside the window.
Travelers can also add their own points, either for their own ears only or to share with others using the app. In order to not be inundated with things like "John's house" or "Mike's garage," users can go in before the trip and choose which sites will set off alerts.
"GeoReader" is for Androids only and is free.
