Move over "Wicked," the upcoming revival of "The Wiz" is prepping to bring the land of Oz back to the New York theater scene. NY1's Roma Torre filed the following report.

Get ready to ease on down the road, because the soulful rock musical "The Wiz" is returning to the New York stage. Based on L. Frank Baum's classic "The Wizard Of Oz," the production will be part of City Center's Summer Encore Series.

Grammy Award winner and New York theater newcomer Ashanti stars as Dorothy.

"This is such a different genre than what I [normally] do in my career," says Ashanti. "Just being able to soak up so much, you know, all the passion that's here, all the stage presence, it's a little different. So I'm learning, I'm a sponge."

Film and television star Orlando Jones and Tony Award-winning actress LaChanze will join Ashanti in the land of Oz as The Wiz and Glinda.

"I think that this happens to be... a new classic," says Jones. "I think of Shakespearean classics, I think of August Wilson, and obviously this show is one of those classic shows that will always come back. Because this is such a part of the human spirit."

"This is one of those musicals that I've loved since I was a kid. It's the truth," says LaChanze. "This is the one show that I know every lyric to - ensemble, Munchkins, Winkies, all of the little minions, I know every single part. And I just wanted to be a part of it."

"The Wiz" originally opened on Broadway in 1975 and ran for more than 1,500 performances. The property also appeared on the big screen and starred pop music icons Diana Ross and Michael Jackson.

The creative team behind Broadway's "In the Heights," director Thomas Kail and choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, will reunite to stage this revival.

"We excited for the chance to get back into the show," says Kail. "The show shows real human emotion."

If you're ready to meet "The Wiz," follow the yellow brick road at City Center starting on June 12.
