The entertainment world is mourning the loss of legendary actress Bea Arthur who died Saturday at her home in Los Angeles at the age of 86.
Arthur was born in Manhattan in 1922, and started her acting career off-Broadway in the late 1940's. She later won a Tony award for her role in the original Broadway production of "Mame."
But it was a move to TV that brought her perhaps her greatest fame.
Arthur won an Emmy for her role as outspoken liberal Maude Findlay in the 1970's sitcom "Maude."
In the 1980's she won a new legion of fans with her role as a Florida retiree on "The Golden Girls."
Friends and fellow performers say Arthur will be missed.
"I loved watching her, I loved it. She was an amazing, an amazing actress, yeah, wonderful comedian," said Actor Kevin Kline.
"She was was so down to earth and so sensible, and wickedly funny. I remember the first photo shoot we did was for TV guide and they wanted her in a motorcycle jacket and a leather hat and at first she looked at it and then she said, ya I can do this. And she had a blast with it," said Jeremy Shaffer, Arthur's publicist.
