Actor James Whitmore died Friday at the age of 87.
Whitmore's son said the Tony and Emmy Award winner died of lung cancer at his California home.
Whitmore gave acclaimed performances in one-man stage shows as Will Rogers, and Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman.
He got an Oscar nomination in 1975 for the film version of the play about Truman, "Give 'Em Hell, Harry," making him the only actor ever nominated for a film with only one cast member.
In recent years, Whitmore appeared on TV shows like "CSI"
and movies like "The Shawshank Redemption."
He was also the long-time pitchman for Miracle-Gro plant food.
