Famed drama critic Clive Barnes died Wednesday morning in Manhattan at the age of 81, according to the New York Post.

Barnes worked for both the New York Times and, more recently, the New York Post. According to the Post's website, the London native died after a battle with liver cancer.

Over his career he reviewed dance, theater, and opera. His last column for the Post was just a few weeks ago.

Barnes also wrote numerous books on theater and the performing arts.

"He had a vast range of interest and knowledge in the arts," said Michael Riedel, a theater and gossip columnist for the New York Post. "I think it was that knowledge he had of all the arts and his deep love for the arts that underpinned his sound judgments as a critic for almost 65 years."

Barnes was appointed a knight of the Order of the Dannebrog by the queen of Denmark in 1972 and was made a commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975.
