"Billy Elliot" dances his way across the pond to land on Broadway.
Elton John, who wrote the score, joined cast members at the show's debut Thursday night.
While it had a successful three-year run in London, John says the show's true success will be measured on Broadway.
"You gauge everything in the theater on how Broadway reacts, really," he said. "We've had success in England and Australia, but until you've been to Broadway and proved yourself here, it doesn't really count. And Broadway is the place."
The show, based on the 2000 movie, opened at the Imperial Theatre with three young actors cast to play the title role. They will rotate performances due to the demands of the part.
Meanwhile, as one show opens, the curtain is coming down on another.
The latest revival of the classic musical "Gypsy" will play its final show at the St. James Theatre on March 1st.
The show, about a pushy stage mother whose daughter grew up to become a stripper, will have played 388 performances by the time it closes.
Gypsy won three Tony Awards this year, including Best Actress in a Musical for its star, Patti LuPone.
