The rarely performed musical theater song cycle, "Songs For a New World," is about to return to the city for a special one night only performance courtesy of some hot Broadway talent.

The show, which originally debuted off-Broadway in 1995, features singers Ashley Brown, Nick Adams, Michael James Scott and Jessica Rush.

Scott, who is currently performing in "The Book of Mormon," says he was inspired to produce the concert after seeing a friend in another off-Broadway song cycle, "Closer Than Ever," last summer.

"We were inspired musically with what this show does and how it reaches an incredible range of people," Scott said.

"Songs For a New World" was one of the first shows that put composer Jason Robert Brown on the musical theater map. Following "Songs," the musician went on to compose the scores for "Parade," "The Last 5 Years," and "13."

"It's such a great challenge to be challenged musically," she said. "I think that's why it hasn't been done. It's such a huge undertaking, it's not just a song cycle you just throw together and do."

While the evening may be the culmination of a few talented friends looking to put on a show, it goes a bit deeper than that. Some of the proceeds from the song cycle will go towards The Performing Arts Project, an organization dedicated to educating aspiring musical theater performers.

"A lot of people gave to me when I was growing up and believed in me," Scott said. "It's like my duty to give back."

"Songs For A New World" is set to take place at XL Cabaret on March 11.
