NY1 VIDEO: On Monday, celebrated Broadway performer Angela Lansbury was feted at the Pierre Hotel by the Drama League. On Stage's Frank DiLella filed the following report.
Broadway's finest turned out on Monday night to pay tribute to the career of stage legend Angela Lansbury. She was honored by The Drama League, a service organization designed to strengthen professional theater across America, at its annual black-tie gala at the Pierre Hotel.
"I am so blessed to have been a part of this business, to have been allowed to come to Broadway as I did and to make my mark early enough with Stephen Sondheim in 'Anyone Can Whistle,'" said Lansbury.
Her career is a varied one, including the musicals "Mame" and "Sweeney Todd," the long-running television series "Murder She Wrote" and work on the big screen. In recent years, the five-time Tony-winning star has treaded the boards on Broadway once again and can currently be seen in the revival of Stephen Sondheim's "A Little Night Music."
Of Lansbury's many Broadway shows, two in particular stand out in her memory.
"There's 'Mame,' my first big musical, and the second thing I will always remember particularly is 'Sweeney Todd,' because that brought me to the young audience through the DVD that we made of the show," Lansbury told NY1. "And thank goodness that was seen, and now those young people are coming to see theater, coming to see me sometimes. If it hadn't been for that show, I don't know if I would have prevailed for this long."
Another famed Sondheim songstress, Bernadette Peters, was on hand for the gala evening.
"Who wouldn't come out to honor Angela? She's one of our precious stars on Broadway. Precious jewel, a great actress, brilliant actress, brilliant performer," said Peters. "At the top of the game still, and we all want to be here for her."
