Are you a single guy looking to spruce up your pad but not quite sure how? We recently caught up with interior designer Taylor Spellman, founder of August Black to talk decorating -- male style.

"August Black is the only interior decorating service that caters strictly to bachelors. Basically we found that these guys who live all around New York, they make a lot of money, they went to great schools, they have fabulous jobs and then when you go to their apartment it looks like their old fraternity house. So we decided to come in, fill the market and go between a full blown interior decorating service and nothing at all -- because as of now there's no middle ground and that's where we come in," said Spellman.

When it comes to turning your apartment into a decorative and practical space, Spellman offers the following tips that will have your apartment glowing in no time.

Before you get started, Spellman suggests starting from a clean slate. Whether you hire someone to clean the pad or you scrub it down yourself, Spellman said you need to start fresh.

"The second thing I'd say is just to keep it basic. If you have some tan items in your home, bring in some brown pillows. Put up a couple things up on your wall with a brown frame. If you have a black couch, bring in grey, just keep it nice and basic. It doesn't have to be intimidating. You need a couch, a rug and a coffee table and already you have what it feels like the beginning of a home," said Spellman.

As for tip number three, Spellman suggests creating a command center.

"Every bachelor comes in and he's got mail, coins, keys, his blackberry, his cell phone, he's got a bunch of stuff. And when you walk into a house, you'll typically notice in most guys' apartments this area of mess. So if you can kind of keep a tray or a little basket and have a place where you can throw your mail, throw your keys a little bowl for your change, it simplifies things and makes the whole process a little more organized, a lot cleaner and overall a lot better," said Spellman.

For entertaining guests, Spellman said solo cups are no longer acceptable for serving wine. She recommends having a few bottles of your favorite wine on hand in your pad along with the appropriate stemware.

Benjamin Levine, a bachelor and client of August Black is already seeing the benefits.

"I have to say all my friends, whether they're bachelors or not, come over and they're always very impressed with me. Sometimes I give her credit, sometimes I take the credit, and even some of the ladies that I've had over are very impressed. So it's important having real wine glasses or having your stuff put away," said Levine.

So whether you're looking to impress or just keep organized, when it comes to your apartment, keep it basic and think practical.
