A new documentary making its world debut at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival takes audiences inside the debate over circumcision. NY1's Kafi Drexel filed the following report. When filmmaker Danae Elon and her husband found out they were pregnant with their first son, an interesting dilemma came up.
"This was a major issue that I had never thought about before. I was pregnant and all of a sudden my husband came to me and said, kind of walked very slowly in knowing who I am and said, 'Danae, we're going to do it if it's a boy right?' and I looked at him and I was like, 'Oh my God, what do you mean?'," recalled Elon.
From what she describes as "one of life's cinematic moments" springs her latest documentary "Partly Private." With an informative and often humorous perspective, the film examines the question of how circumcision, something grounded in ancient cultural tradition, has become a regular modern-day medical practice in America and other parts of the world.
Without taking any real sides, the film takes viewers through both sides of the debate from the views of those strongly in favor of circumcision as a medical practice or religious rite to the extreme anti-circumcision movement.
"I tried to keep away from saying what is right and wrong to do, that's a personal decision. However, you should know where this comes from, how absurd it is, but at least know your facts, don't just do something blindly," said Elon.
After choosing to circumcise their first son, and then struggling with and questioning the decision, Elon takes viewers on a journey from New York, to London, Italy, Turkey and Israel exploring Western views on male circumcision -- all while trying to decide what is best for her second son.
"I kind of hope that people will take away from this documentary really what kind of decisions they make in life for their children and for themselves. That can be decisions in general and what kind of parents they want to be, and what it takes to be a family, and what it takes to be in a relationship," said Elon.
"Partly Private" screens during the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival at AMC Loews Village VII.
