City health officials are reportedly offering a big financial incentive to doctors who keep their patients heart healthy.

The Department of Health is offering thousands of dollars in cash bonuses to doctors whose patients show improvement.

As part of a privately-funded $4 million program, doctors can earn up to $200 by reducing a patient's blood pressure and cholesterol levels and having the patient participate in anti-smoking programs.

Each doctor can earn up to $20,000.

More than 200 doctors at practices that use electronic health records will qualify for the incentives.

Critics charge the money could be better spent – especially when the DOH has been forced to cut 10 percent of its budget.
